There is no such thing as a good margarita made from a mix. Which is not to say I’ve never enjoyed such a margarita, but they are simply sub-par. The only way to achieve margarita perfection is to do a bit of the work yourself. But don’t worry, it’s not THAT much work. And the payoff is absolutely worth it.

I got the core of this recipe from my friend Robert – architect, dog owner, and master drink maker. I added the Grand Marnier at my wife’s request, and even though it seemed a little girly I now add it every time. Because it rules. It totally takes these over the top. Restaurants often refer to this as the Cadillac Margarita, but in light of Chrysler’s current fiscal problems, I suggest simply referring to it as the Badass.

What you’ll need

6 oz blanco or silver tequila (Robert suggest Don Julio if you have the bucks, or Cuervo Blanco. I haven’t been able to find either so I use a good silver tequila.)

6 oz fresh squeezed lime juice (About 10 limes.)

5 oz Cointreau

1 oz simple syrup

1 shot Grand Marnier per drink

What you do

Make your simple syrup first. Make a lot and store the extra in the fridge. You don’t use that much so it’ll last a long time. Boil 1 cup sugar with 1 cup water. Let it cool before mixing with the other ingredients.

Squeeze your limes. I squeeze them straight into a large graduated measuring cup so I know when I’m done squeezing.

Combine everything except the Grand Marnier in a shaker with a little ice and shake. Pour over ice in salted glasses. Garnish with lime.

Now the badass addition – pour one shot of Grand Marnier into each glass, stir, and enjoy.

This makes about 4 drinks. If I’m within an hour’s drive of you when you make these, you’re required to inform me so I can come over. I’ll need a place to sleep.

Enter: Sangria. Summer’s sweet delight!

Our favorite recipe for sangria actually comes from that woman we all love to hate — Martha Stewart. But it’s a can’t-miss recipe with just the right balance of flavors. I hope you enjoy it as much as we do!

Summer Sangria
From MarthaStewart.com

4 oranges: 2 juiced, 2 halved lengthwise and thinly sliced crosswise (you can also use full-pulp prepared OJ if you’re lazy like my husband
1/3 to 1/2 cup sugar
1/4 cup brandy
1 bottle dry red wine, chilled (we usually use merlot)
2 lemons, thinly sliced
2 cups seltzer or club soda
Chilled ice cubes, for serving

In a large pitcher, combine orange juice, sugar, and brandy; stir well to dissolve sugar. Add wine, orange slices, lemon slices, and seltzer; stir to combine. Fill glasses with ice before serving. Serves 8. (Very easy to double or triple as needed

It’s a lovely day here on the California Coast (although it would be lovelier if I were going to actually SEE the ocean today, but that’s another story). I’m already wondering just what I’m going to make for dinner tonight, and a nice cold beer is already on the list.

If we were having people over, this Vodka Berry Spritzer, that I snagged from Real Simple magazine, would ALSO be on the list. But an entire pitcher of vodka soaked berries really isn’t in my best interest today. But you could, and should, enjoy it!

Ingredients:

4 limes

3 tablespoons sugar

1 liter club soda

1 cup berry-flavored vodka

1 cup blueberries

1 cup raspberries

ice

Directions:

1) Halve the limes and squeeze the juice into a pitcher. (If desired, cut the squeezed limes into small pieces and add to the pitcher.) Mix in the sugar. Add the club soda, vodka, blueberries, and raspberries. Pour over ice.

2) ENJOY

So it’s June, and in my world that means it is summertime! My favorite summertime drink is Sangria, mostly because it is really just a way of spicing up wine Here is my favorite Sangria recipe!

Sangria is made in 2 parts, this is the best combo I have found:

Wine Base:
Half a bottle of Merlot, I use something cheaper like Sutterhome, since you really can’t tell the difference in the end result.

2 oz of Orange Juice
2 oz of Lemonade (yellow)

Mix that together. This should be enough to make about 12 glasses or so. The mix should be fine in the fridge for about 5 days.

To make the actual drink I start with a pint sized glass. I like to rim mine with sugar, but it’s optional.

Before adding ice, into the glass squeeze:
2 lime slices
1 lemon slice
1 orange slice
*after squeezing, toss the fruit in the glass as well*

Add ice to top of glass. Pour 2 oz of Triple Sec onto the fruit and ice. Add Sprite until glass is about 3/4 full and then add wine mixture to complete the drink!

Feel free to add an umbrella! Enjoy!
